Field & Fold started with a simple frustration. Almost everything sold as outdoor gear today is built to a price and designed to be replaced within a season or two. Zips fail, coatings peel, foam crumbles, and the whole thing ends up in landfill looking exactly as cheap as it was. We wanted the opposite of that.
Two Materials, Already Proven
So we built the range around two materials that have already proven themselves over more than a century of hard use: full-grain leather and waxed cotton canvas. Neither is the lightest option and neither is the cheapest. What they are is honest. Waxed canvas stiffens in the cold, softens with handling and sheds a downpour without a technical membrane to delaminate. Full-grain leather is the outer layer of the hide, left intact rather than sanded down, which is why it takes a scratch instead of a tear and why it darkens rather than flakes.
What We Look For
Every bag, wallet, strap and roll we stock is chosen against the same short list. Solid brass or antique-finish hardware instead of plated pot metal. Stitching that can be unpicked and repaired rather than bonded shut. Edges that are burnished and sealed rather than glued and painted. Linings that can take a knock. If a piece does not clear that list, it does not go on the site, regardless of how well it would sell.
Built to Change
The best thing about this kind of gear is that it does not stay the way you bought it. Leather takes the oil from your hands, the sun off the dashboard and the scuff from the tray of a ute. Canvas fades where the strap sits and darkens where you grip it. Give it a year and two identical bags belonging to two different people will look nothing alike. That is not wear and tear, it is the point.
